About Local Housing Solutions

Local Housing Solutions is a one-stop housing policy platform with actionable tools and step-by-step guidance to help cities develop, implement, and monitor local housing strategies. Developed for policymakers and practitioners from cities of different sizes and different levels of resources and technical capacity, LHS presents a rich and evolving set of resources to support comprehensive, balanced, and equitable housing strategies that enhance affordability, protect low-income residents from displacement and unsafe conditions, and foster inclusive neighborhoods. LHS also provides information to help cities pursue housing policies that reduce disparities, advance opportunity, and promote racial equity.

Launched in 2018, LHS was developed through the National Community of Practice on Local Housing Policy, a joint project of the NYU Furman Center and Abt Associates. The Community of Practice was led by Ingrid Gould Ellen (NYU Furman Center), Jeffrey Lubell (Abt Associates) and Mark A. Willis (NYU Furman Center).

A core Community of Practice working group met intensively over nearly two years to inform LHS’s guiding principles and the website’s structure and content, and a national advisory council helped ensure LHS’s content reflects a broad range of views and experiences. Community of Practice and Advisory board members are listed below.

Funding for the Community of Practice was provided by the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Additional funding to launch the Local Housing Solutions website was provided by The Kresge Foundation and the JPMorgan Chase Foundation

LHS is now managed and updated by the NYU Furman Center’s Housing Solutions Lab. New policy content and tools are added to LHS regularly, in partnership with Abt Associates. The Housing Solutions Lab and ongoing support of LHS is made possible with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

LHS and the Housing Solutions Lab also receive funding from a variety of philanthropic partners on specific initiatives or publications, including the Lincoln Land Institute, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Arthur M. Blank foundation, and Wells Fargo, among others.

All opinions expressed on LHS are those of the NYU Furman Center and Abt Associates, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the funders.

The Housing Solutions Lab welcomes feedback, questions, and examples of how LHS is useful to your work from organizations and municipalities interested in developing equitable local housing strategies.
