California legalized ADUs. But unpermitted ones are still far more common, new research finds
In recent years, California has tried to make building legal accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as easy as possible. Official records show that the number of legal ADUs increased recently in San José, but a new study funded by the Lab suggests that more than 1,000 unpermitted ADUs were constructed in the same period, outpacing legal production and underscoring the urgent need for affordable housing options.
