In recent decades, evictions have been singled out as a major national housing problem due to their alarming scale and the negative impact they have on tenants, especially low-income individuals and people of color. However, little is known about the eviction landscape in small and midsize cities.
With support from the NYU Furman Center’s Housing Solutions Lab, a study by the Evicted in Oregon team analyzed evictions in three small and midsize cities in Oregon: Eugene, Salem, and Albany. Their research found high eviction filing rates, frequent default judgments against tenants who fail to appear in court, and significant racial disparities in eviction impacts.
